Biography

David Lagarde is a Phd candidate in geography at the LISST (Laboratoire Interdisciplinaire Solidarités, Sociétés, Territoires) at Toulouse University. He holds a master’s degree from Migrinter (University of Poitiers) and used to work as an independent cartographer. His Phd research project aims to question the links between social and spatial networks in refugees’ journeys to and from Jordan, focusing mainly on the conditions of movement at different spatial scales. On the other hand, his research pays a particular attention to the question of visualization in order to represent the complexity and diversity of these spatial and social dynamics.

Research project

Focused on in-depth field investigations at the micro level, his research aims to study the recent flows of Syrian refugees in Jordan and their social integration in the country. It will thus start to analyse the social networks that facilitate migration routes (Muhanamoha & al., 2010) linking Syria to Jordan, despite the many obstacles refugees can encounter on their way. The other objective of the research is to question the influence of social capital and the varying intensity of social relationships (Collyer, 2005; Van Hear, 2014) regarding Syrians’ coping strategies and access to resources in a context of forced migration, from their departure of Syria until their settlement –rather it is temporary or definitive- in Jordan.
