Biography

Pauline Piraud-Fournet is an archaeologist and an architect. She has been working for many years with the Ifpo, the French Foreign Ministry and the CNRS on several archaeological sites in the Near East (Lebanon, Jordan and Syria), Tunisia and Egypt, looking at sanctuaries, funeral architecture and habitat. From 2006 to 2012 she held the position of architect at the Ifpo in Damascus, and later in Amman.
Using archaeological methods, she worked on contemporary funeral and memorial monuments located in the region of Sweida in Syria. During an archaeological expedition to Pakistan, she contributed to an ethnographic survey and to a study of villages and family compounds in Baluchistan. It has been demonstrated that despite its disorganized aspect, habitat in these communities actually follows strict lines imposed by the patrilineal system of the Baloch society.

Research project

To complete, confirm and illustrate data collected (in terms of dwelling strategies and housing evolutions) through interviews conducted by Kamel Doraï and Géraldine Chatelard with Syrian refugees, Pauline Piraud-Fournet and Thibaud Fournet survey habitat and its organization in some neighbourhoods of Zaatari camp and village, drawing upon ethnographic and archaeological methods. With such approach, every step of the development of habitat can be documented and retraced, from the tent given to each family at their entry of the camp to the constitution of makeshift housing and of a neighbourhood life. The study of these processes helps identifying and understanding the strategies implemented: allocation of functions and uses amid constraining spaces, nature and origins of forms of spaces that are reproduced, reinterpretation of traditional structures in emergency context…
